Arviat is the centre of a diverse ecosystem of rivers and coastline offering glimpses of:
- polar bear migrations
- migratory bird nesting areas
- pods of belugas
- migrating caribou
- Arctic plant life
Take a trip by dogteam or snowmobile to see the polar bears hunting along the floe edge. October and November are the best months to view the polar bear migration. Travel up the rivers near Arviat to traditional fishing grounds. You may see herds of migrating caribou on your travels.

The McConnell River Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a short walk from Arviat. The bird sanctuary is a nesting spot for:
- geese
- sandhill cranes
- swans
- ducks
- loons
- snowy owls
- peregrine falcons
- gyrfalcons
The bird sanctuary encompasses tidal flats where you can see:
- sandpipers
- plovers
- phalaropes
- arctic terns
- gulls
- jaegers
The snow geese are known to march their gaggles right into Arviat.
The McConnell Bird Sanctuary area has been designated as a Wetland of International Importance, and a Key Migratory Terrestrial Bird Habitat.
